Follow up on Jim Hall Memorial Trout Classic

Here's a follow up on the outcome of this years, May Trout Classic. The top prize winner went to Dan Marshall from Sugarloaf. Dan halled in an 11.07 pound rainbow trout! This was the top prize and made Dan $2,500.00 richer.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Marshall also won the event in 1993 & 94. There were nine cash payouts, all the trout that won cash prizes tipped the scale at 7 pounds or above.

The junior division was won by Anthony Cordero with his 2.37 pound rainbow trout. The pee-wee division was taken by a 3.88 pound trout caught by Francesa Stover from San Bernardino. There were three tagged trout catch but none were the $10,000 prize.

This year, we were told, was a record breaker participation of 448 anglers fishing the event.

Memorial Day Weekend full of fishing and fun!

Memorial Day Weekend was full of interesting weather and action packed memories on Big Bear Lake. Everyone had a great time and managed to find the positive things in the ever changing weather as we decided that it was an additional bonus that made the fishing unforgettable. Saturday morning started with brushing the light layer of snow off the boat and preparing to venture out into the wind, fog and brutal cold. It was a good thing the trout were biting and did not disappoint or keep us waiting out it the frigid conditions. Within 72 hours Lucky Bear Fishing spent 27 hours on the lake with families from Arizona, Nevada and California. We did nine three hour trips and each trip averaged 8 hard fighting rainbow trout.
With the weather, dramatic temperature changes in the lake in the past month and all the water sports activities it was important to prepare and plan. We got plenty of rest and then set out with intentions of having to work a little harder! We did change up lures/bait often, tried different depths and covered lots of territory. There were only six hours of fishing where the trout were a bit predictable but they had us on our toes and being creative while on the hunt the entire weekend. It was not easy, but planning did pay off! We had many fish right at the 2 lb range and several over and even a 3.6 lb lunker on Tuesday early evening! Richard Wen from Mesa, AZ caught that lunker and is currently winning the LUCKY LUNKER contest. Please visit www.luckylunker.com for details.
The depths that hit the most were 6 feet and between 19-24 feet. PKLures, Michigan Stingers, Needlefish and Night Crawlers were hit the most. Copper, Silver and Chartreuse and Pink/Purple colors were the hottest. Metcalf Bay and in front of Lagunita Lodge were where we caught the most fish. What an awesome Memorial Day Weekend trout fishing with fine folks on one of the most beautiful lakes in America. Big Bear Lake is the perfect place to celebrate our freedom and for moments to reflect and remember those who protect and fight for our great country. It was nice to hear and to say so many words of appreciation and gratitude for each other as well as for nature and all the beauty surrounding us as we fished.

Out Door News Service - Pro Rating for Fishing on Big Bear Lake

Pro's Overall Rating for this Water: 4
Conditions on the lake are becoming more like summer than spring. Water clarity is at about 11 feet and the oxygen levels have dropped off at 33 feet near the dam, Papoose Bay, and the west ramp, and down to 23 feet off the observatory and Juniper Pt. Trout are still showing in good numbers from the observatory and west, while the east end is producing more summer time species with surprisingly good action on crappie, bluegill and smallmouth bass. The largemouth bass are going into their spawn mode, gathering on nesting beds along the shore of the lake.

Trout are being landed by just about any means known. Trollers going three to four colors down with just about any spoon in tow are getting their limits. Surface action can be good early and late in the day. Bait anglers using a slip bobber rigged to about 20 feet or drifting from a boat are producing good counts, while shore anglers have a lesser chance if they fish just off the bottom.

Pro Rating from Lucky Bear Fishing Charters In Big Bear Lake

Pro's Overall Rating for this Water: 4
The past week has been gorgeous on Big Bear Lake and the rainbow trout are definitely on the move and keeping all us fishermen and fisher women on our toes. It's a good time to have a great selection of lures and variety of bait and even some scent as an added attractant. The good news is that if you are willing to put a little effort into changing up your lures, depths, speeds and locations you should come in with your limit of quality great eating rainbow trout and a satisfying day on the lake. The areas we caught our fish in the past days were trolling in Boulder Bay, just outside Papoose Bay and anywhere in between and back to the observatory. Yes, there is plenty of area to cover on the lake right now which actually makes it an added benefit because it's hard to go wrong no matter which way you head from the observatory all the way west to the dam. Needlefish, Dick Nites, Thomas Bouyants and Rapalas were getting the most action. Silver, copper, brass with orange or chartreuse lures hit most on leaded lines at 3-4 colors and down riggers with night crawlers at 6 and 20 feet hit eventually. Captain/Guide Mike says that chartreuse 01 Dick Nite has hit most often at 3-4 colors! Plenty of territory, plenty of depths and plenty of lures makes for a great day of trout fishing on Big Bear Lake. It should be an action packed Memorial Day weekend on the most beautiful lake in Southern California!

Locals Claim the Best Fishing Spots In Big Bear Lake

Here's some information that comes from the WMD, Big Bear Lake Water Management as well as some fishing enthusiasts in Big Bear. According to the information received, these areas were considered to be the top fishing sweet spots on Big Bear Lake.

The various people interviewed for this information were actually "catching" fish, not just fishing. By the looks of their catch these people really know their fishing.

Below are the suggested spots. So, stake your claim for your next great fishing story. List is in no specific order.
  • East Ramp
  • West Ramp
  • Near the Big Bear Marina
  • The triangle from Big Bear Marina to the Solar Observatory to Grout Bay
  • Stanfield Road cutoff from Big Bear Boulevard to North Shore Drive,
  • Along the bike path
  • Boulder Bay
While these spots are highly suggested, we are certainly not suggesting that they are the only place to fish. Big Bear Lake is a fisherman's dream! At 73,000 acre feet, Big Bear Lake is the world’s largest man-made lake, abundant with many varieties of fish just waiting for a good fight!

With such an awesome lake its no wonder that fishing in Big Bear has become a popular pastime. Fish are caught daily from the shoreline near the dam on both sides of the lake, just East of Stanfield Cutoff and from anywhere you can cast your line.

We'd love to hear what your experience has been fishing at one of these specific suggested sweet spots. Do you have your own favorite hot spot on Big Bear Lake? If you'd like to share we'd love to hear from you. Visit our Facebook page and tell us your story.

Check out this link for more information of fishing the waters of Big Bear as well as the current up and coming fishing tournaments.  The Big Bear Lake Fishing Report has a map of the lake  .

Fishing Conditions as Reported last reported By Big Bear Sporting Goods

Rated 4 stars out of 5

The Trout bite remains strong from both the north shoreline and boats trolling the southern bays as well as near the observatory. Bass and Crappie are biting real good too! Just hang a jig or nightcrawler from a bobber for the Crappie while the Large Mouths seem to prefer artificials and spinners. Lake temps in the High 50's (West End) to Mid 60's (East End) and clarity to about 12'. The trout are hanging around 18'-25' deep and Trollers are getting hit by some big fish near the solar observatory...the latest was a 12.5' rod bendin' Rainbow that hit on a "Needlfish".  Power Baits and Gulp! rule the day for shoreline anglers from the dam to Juniper Point especially in Garlic and Salmon Egg fishing from the bottom with a 4'-5' leader. The D.O. content remains in the 7.1 (At approx 20' deep) to 7.6 (Surface) range West To East on Big Bear Lake.

Snow last night?

Would you believe that we got a light dusting of snow last night? Wow, what an unexpected delight.

I had talked to a friend who lives in Tahoe and was told that they got lots of snow yesterday. Don't know if it continued thru today but I thought that was really unusual. Until, it happened to us last night. All snow was gone after the morning sun hit it.

Anyway, thought this would be of interest to those of you who are sunning yourselves at the beach this weekend.

Hope to see you in the mountains soon!

Memorial Day Weekend

What is Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southern schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other cities during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates were in May.) By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. As a marker it typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

We still have available homes for this weekend if your planning a last minute trip to celebrate this national holiday, give us a call @ (866) 372-2246 and we'll make your reservation over the phone.

Geodes Available at Gold Rush Resort Rentals!

That's right, we now have Geodes at Gold Rush Resort Rentals! These are awesome and the best thing is that no two are alike. Each one is offers their own tiny treasures inside. This is a great way to introduce the kids to the gifts of nature.

Don't know what a geode is? Well, to put in simple terms. A geode is much like a tootsie pop, many (not all) are round on the outside with a surprise center on the inside.   Geodes are created in the hollow areas of soil where tree roots or animal burrows would be. They are also formed from the bubbles in volcanic rock. Over time, thousands of years, dissolved minerals seep into a hollow area and harden into an outer shell creating the geode. The minerals continue to form on the inside walls of the shell, growing towards the center. The most common dissolved mineral is quartz, but amethyst and other minerals are also found.

Amazing as they are, their appeal knows no bounds in age group. We are seeing that young children and adults alike are amazed to crack open a geode and discover its beautiful crystals. Many have never seen a geode before!

You don't have to rent a cabin in order to acquire your geode. Just come on into our office and choose one from our box. We have nugget size and motherlode size. The nugget size is only $4.99 each and the motherlode is just $9.99.

You can take the geode home and break it there or you can have us do the work for you. When we do it we like to make a ceremony out of it and provide an authentic "prospectors" helmet with googles to protect the eyes from possible rock fragments and then we go to work pounding on the rock with our miners pick until it cracks. This is a perfect kodack moment or even take a video.

The geode makes an great souvenier from your trip in Big Bear.

We look forward to helping you with a gift from mother nature!

Rainbow Trout on the Move in Big Bear Lake!

If you are planning to come up for May Trout Classic this weekend it should be beautiful and the trout should not disappoint! You might need to work a little harder and change your strategy. What might work on one day may not the next. Lately our plan has changed dramatically from hour to hour and you should go with what the trout want and not with what YOU want! Don't stick with what you "think" should work if it's not but instead make sure you bring plenty of backup and get creative! You cannot have enough tricks in your bag right now. Needlefish and Dick Nites in almost any color/pattern have hit for us since this past Saturday and produce the most fish but with NO exact locations, depths or speed! Night crawlers have got the biggest fish- several at over 2 lbs. Depths that you would not necessarily think would work just might. Bottom line- don't be shy with selection and don't give up. Make sure to change up about every 15 minutes if you have not found a lure and depth the trout are lovin' and you should come in with a fine stringer and get your limit. The quality of fish is what matters now NOT quantity! The trout are fighting hard, putting on a great show and are usually 1 1/2 to 2 lbs or bigger. Go to Big Bear Sporting goods and let the guys help you to beef up your selection and also get some scent! All fish in the photographs were perfect for eating. John and Karen from Vegas spent the past two days trolling and caught 21 fish in eight hours. Tuesday the bite was on and Wednesday the bite turned way down but was still good. All smaller trout were released and they kept some nice ones! These fish were caught from 2ft to 24ft in Metcalf Bay or East to Lighthouse Resort and most were near the observatory. Good Luck to everyone participating in the May Trout Classic it should be nice weather. John spent his 79th Birthday 5/15/12 on Big Bear Lake and the trout did not let him down!

Trout Fishing Season 2012 is here!

What a terrific start to fishing season 2012 on beautiful Big Bear Lake. Lucky Bear spent six hours out on the lake saturday and had over two dozen hard fighting trout on the lines. The first trip started off at 7am with a greeting from two amazing eagles soaring over Windy Point! We trolled night crawlers and needlefish or dick nites in orange colors. The rainbow trout were biting between 15-20 feet near the observatory. Mid day things stayed very similar as far as location, depths and lures except the bite did pick up and we had a few more fish on the lines. All of the trout kept were nice size and quality pink meat. Many fish stripped the lines and put on a show- it was a exciting and fun day of fishing. That big, bright, full moon didn't stop the trout from biting! Fishing is better than ever on Big Bear Lake and it's a perfect time to come up to the mountains where the skies are clear and blue. Free fishing days in California are July 7th and September 8th this year so why not plan a trip up to Big Bear to go fishing! Anyone staying at Gold Rush Resort Rentals is welcome to call Mike or Trish at Lucky Bear Fishing Charters for any fishing tips or suggestions 909-866-7303.
