Get High, Ride the Scenic Sky Chair In Big Bear

In keeping with our promise to post information pertaining to things to do in Big Bear over the Summer vacationing season, here’s a fun activity that you may not have realized was an option to choose.

The Snow Summit Ski lift continues to run its chair lift daily for visitors to enjoy a quiet trip to the top all the while enjoying the awesome scenic views that surround. After winter the resort transforms one of their lifts into the Scenic Sky Chair. The ride is approximately a mile in length, beginning from an elevation of 7,000 feet raising to 8,200 feet by the time your reach the top.

Once at the top you are able to explore the mountain by spending some time hiking the area and then take a break and enjoy a barbecue lunch at the View Haus. You can also hike down the mountain instead of taking the Sky Chair down. The Sky Chair is a family friendly adventure. Rated G for all ages.

Hours of operation for summer months are Saturdays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Sunday – Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

We are here to help you when you’re ready to stay a couple of nights or more. Browse our inventory on-line at Gold Rush Resort Rentals. Also, check out our “specials” to see what discounts will work for you and plan stay dates around that special!

We  look forward to helping you with a stay and making some awesome memories during the summer of 2012!

Is it Ice Cream?

Making ice-cream and thinking back to simpler times, I just remembered what we did as kids to make cup cakes "appear" like one of our favorite all time treats - ice-cream.

These were so fun to make and even more fun to eat. This is one easy thing to do with kids. They're an awesome treat to take to school bake sales, parties, or just to enjoy to make your day a little more whimsical.

I searched the internet and found these how to clips. I have included them here.

My personal suggestion is that you create your own version of your favorite flavor of ice cream. Take a regular cake batter and kick it up a notch to mimic ice-cream flavors of Rocky Road, Pistachio, Butter Pecan or whatever traditional ice cream flavor you enjoy - all it takes is a little creativity. As they say, think OUTSIDE the box. (pun intended)

Don't forget, if you are making these while you are at the cabin, look further into the blog for baking instructions at high altitude or just read the instructions on the cake mix box.

This rendition is baking the cake mix inside the cone.
This version is making small and large cupcakes ahead of time and combining the cakes and candy in the cone and finishing it off with frosting.
If you choose to do this method, I would suggest using easy to eat candy like m&m's, gummy bears, or any other soft candy - NOT gum balls!
Here's another option using the method of "cake pops"

Let us know if any of these suggestions have helped you. We'd love to hear from you.

What a week of fishing and fun celebrating Independence Day!

This past holiday week brought Lucky Bear some special trips as usual. From kids, little babies, all ages of adults and several dogs we all had a blast together out on the gorgeous lake. We were blessed with beautiful sunny blue skies that were filled with puffy clouds. It was truly a spectacular way to spend time celebrating the 4th of July. One of the best trips ever for a first fish experience was a customer from Gold Rush Resort Rentals! This fine family had a group of four boys and a small girl who wanted to experience fishing on Big Bear Lake. One boy in the family made a special fishing request to fish on a boat with a guide. As their fishing trip started four of the kids got to reel in trout right away with lots of action as the trout were biting at the first moments but then we had to wait while the fish took a break. The trip went on and then right near the end the boy who wanted to fish the most finally got his special FIRST FISH! It was a beauty, the largest of all and about 1.5lbs. His trout fought hard and put on a show all the way to the net. He was the star of the trip. We look forward to seeing this family again one day as they plan to come back to the cabin they rented and fish with us again too! It was a satisfying Gold Rush/Lucky Bear experience for them and made us feel good that their stay was so perfect. Each fishing trip had it's special and fun memorable moments this week and we can't get enough of seeing people of all ages get hooked for life on the joy our trout fishing. The week was hit and miss at times as far as the bite goes. We had a trip with only three fish in three hours but with all the boat activity, fireworks and even an earthquake I guess we can allow for the trout to shy away for a bit. The best lures of the week were PK Lures flutter fish and prototypes, Michigan Stingers, flies and night crawlers. We trolled from Metcalf Bay/Windy Point and west toward the dam. Most nice size hold overs were caught out in the deeper water. Our lines were out from the surface to to 23 feet deep. We averaged 9 fish in a three hour trip. Low trip 3 fish and our highest trip was 22 fish. Morning and late afternoons are producing the most trout however we have had a few nice mid day trips as well. It is important to be active and change up lures every 15 minutes and you must have a nice selection of lures now because each day and hour can be different. It's a great year to hire a charter or guide because fishing has become more unpredictable and much trickier this season! Check out the current winner of the annual LUCKY LUNKER contest and visit www.luckylunker.com for more information. Bayard Johnson from Stillwater, Minnesota caught a 7.14 lb rainbow trout on the north shore trolling a fly on July 3, 2012.

Water Skiing is not just for Humans!

One of the most popular summer time activities on Big Bear Lake is water skiing. Big Bear has all kinds of skiing activities. Water skiing & jet skiing in the summer and snow skiing in the winter.

Our lake offers 23 miles of shoreline to cruise around. Surrounded by tall pines and the beauty of nature, it's not difficult to understand why active people enjoy water skiing as well as other acquatic activities.

The best time for water skiing is in the mornings as the lake is calm and winds are usually low. In the late morning is usually when the water becomes choppy and more unstable.

Besides us humans, other criters have also enjoyed the sport. We're sure you're gonna enjoy this clip.

Up Date on the Lucky Lunker Contest with Lucky Bear Fishing Charters

Hey, for all you fishing enthusiasts out there, just found out the latest on the lead in the Lucky Lunker Contest put on by our favorite top team fishing guides in Big Bear, Trish & Mike Marzell from Lucky Bear Fishing Charters.

Apparently, over the July 4th holiday the lake has been very generous to one man in specific.

Bayard Johnson was trollling with Lucky Bear on July 3rd, 2012 and he caught this 7.14 lb beautiful bow!
This catch makes Bayard the leading contender in the Lucky Lunker contest up to this point.

Our guests who have taken a trip with Mike & Trish have all come back raving about the time they had.

We can't say it enough, you just haven't lived until you take a trip on the lake with professionals who not only share their secrets but also are generous with their hearts and want to ensure all their guests go home with special memories to cherish for years to come.

There's no "catch" to this, just a "reel" good time!  Yes, yes, the puns are intended! LOL ;)

Welcome all Tough Mudders!

We're excited to welcome the participants of the Tough Mudder competition!

The Tough Mudder event is being held in close proximity to Big Bear.

July 7 & 8 at the Snow Valley Mountain Resort.

Tough Mudder is not your average mud run or endurance' race. It's a twist between Ironman meets Burning Man. Events are offered in a variety of areas. Visit the website to find a location nearest you if you want to participate or spectate.

It's 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Forget finish times. Simply completing a Tough Mudder is a badge of honor. All Tough Mudder sponsorship proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project.

WARNING: A Tough Mudder is 3-4 times longer and much tougher than a typical mud run such as Warrior Dash. Only 78% of participants at our last event in New Jersey finished. Only those in reasonable physical condition should enter.

Anyone wanting information pertaining to the event can click here for more info.

GOOD LUCK AND BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Homemade Lemonade - The Old Fashion Way

What would summer be without lemonade? I can't imagine it. I can remember when my brother and I hosted our neighborhood lemonade stand.

While browsing the web, I came across this video on making lemonade and wanted to share it.

When staying in one of our cabins in Big Bear, try an adventure of doing things the old fashioned way. There's something very special about bringing back the good ol' days and doing things how our moms and dads did them way back when.

Try it - you'll like it, as they say. If you have children, this would be a great time to take the time to introduce them to some of the simple pleasures in life.

Hope you enjoy this recipe......

Coming Down from the Glo of the Fourth!

What a day it was. Lots of hustle and bustle and moving about in the village! As one would imagine, Big Bear Lake was a buzz for the Independence Day celebrations.

It's now official, the summer season has begun. When I think of summer, the things that come to mind is mouth watering watermelon, refreshing ice cold lemonade, summer sports on the lake, water and wake board skiing, jet skiing, inner tubing, parasailing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking the many trails in our local moutains, biking the summit mountain, off roading, miniature golfing, riding the water slides at Magic Mountain and the Alpine Slide, fishing the waters of Big Bear Lake, taking a narrated cruise on the lake, and grilling on the barbecue!

Wow, did I leave anything out?  As summer progresses we will highlight some of the summer activities that Big Bear offers here in our blog.

In the meantime - Gentleman or women, fire up your grills........
