Some Interesting Information on our (local) National Birds

Did you know we have 2 beautiful American bald eagles here in Big Bear that you can get "up close and personal" with?  They are "Alaska" (the male) and "Valentine" (the female). They can be seen at our local "zoo" - the Big Bear Alpine Zoo which is an alpine wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation center operated locally by the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District of San Bernardino County.  Alaska came to us from Washington state.  He was found with a gunshot wound and is also blind in one eye due to an infection. Valentine has cataracts and is virtually blind.  They both have a home for life at our local facility. This past spring, Valentine actually laid an egg!  Both Alaska and Valentine guarded their egg fiercely.  Unfortunately the egg did not hatch, but there's always next spring!  Our zoo is open year round (weather permitting and excluding Christmas Day).  The best time to go is around 3 p.m. when they conduct their daily feeding tour.  Price is very affordable from $6.00 - $9.00 with children under 3 admitted for free.  Consider at visit to the zoo when you're in Big Bear!!
