Are you ready for some craziness .... Big Bear style?

Get ready for some zany lunacy and craziness - Big Bear style!

This Saturday July 27th will be our annual Doo Dah Parade to be held over in Fawnskin (on the north shore of Big Bear Lake).  It has been dubbed (one of ) the shortest parades ever held.  Only one block long, it will start about 10 a.m. with the route going through the historic business district of downtown Fawnskin.  This year there are said to be about 30 group and individual entries that will comprise the parade line up.

Some say it's the 49th annual Doo Dah Parade, some say not .... also if you're planning on attending you might want to arrive just a little early as it may or may not start early or on time, you just never know!  It's just that kind of an event.  It is another of our Old Miner's Day events which is sponsored by that organization as well as the Fawnskin Chamber of Commerce and Moose Lodge #2085.

After the parade you might want to hang around and attend the Big Bear Moose Festival, put on by our local Moose Lodge and to be held at the Don Conroy Memorial Park which is just behind the lodge itself. at 39211 North Shore Dr. (Hwy 38) in Fawnskin.  There will be food booths, vendors and entertainment for the whole family!

So it looks like a fun day for all to enjoy.  This will also just about wind up this years Old Miner's Days festivities.  Hope to see you there!

Monsoon Season hits Big Bear Valley!

Well folks, it's that time of year again when our beautiful Big Bear Valley can expect to see afternoon/evening/nighttime thunder storms, lightening strikes, deluges of rain, maybe some occasional hail, wind and flooding! 

Living here in the San Bernardino mountains we can experience all kinds of weather that is so much different from that which folks experience living in off the mountain locations like the upper and lower California deserts, the LA basin, Orange County and the San Diego area!  Even though we are only a couple hours away from most of these locations, we live in an very different climate zone!

We mountain locals love the fact that these rain storms will settle the dust and wash away the yellow pine pollen that covers everything in the late spring and early summer.  It also will cool the air to a tolerable temperature and relieve the hot stickiness  that comes with the high humidity!!

With the Monsoons comes the threat of fires from lightning strikes.  Over the course of one "Monsoon event" there can be over 300 + ground strikes from the lightning!  We are very fortunate here in Big Bear that most "locals" are aware of this and will report smoke sightings and even the smell of smoke in the air to our local fire departments, which will vigilantly  check out any and all calls of this nature either by aircraft surveillance or physically going to a location where smoke has been seen. However, on the up side, Mother Nature's "light show" at night with the lightening flashing is a real spectacle to behold!  Sit out on your front porch and let the show begin!

Sometimes some of our furry family members are afraid of the noise the thunder makes, but the fact that these rain storms are over relatively quickly is comforting to us knowing that our "kids" will not be stressed out for very long.

The Monsoon "season" doesn't really last very long.  By the end of August, it's back to warm, sunshiny days and cool nights and the anticipation of fall just around the corner with its beautiful color changing very picturesque foliage .... but that's another story .....

Our "Cozy Corner" cabin is just the ticket for your next Big Bear adventure!  Close to everything, including Big Bear Village, the lake, the slopes and shopping!  "Right on the corner - right on the price"!!

This cute 3 bedroom, 2 bath cabin will sleep up to 6 people!  Don't let the exterior of the cabin fool you!  Even though it looks like an older style cabin, the interior has been completely re-done and modernized!  Comfy and cozy, the living room offers multiple couches to relax on - in front of the brick gas log fireplace or the 42" flat screen TV with DVD and owner provided "video on demand" option.  The cabin also boasts wifi internet service so you can easily keep up on work or social media! The dining area and open country style kitchen  has been updated with brand new appliances making it a great space to enjoy preparing that special meal or midnight snack!  The main level is also home to the master bedroom with a king size bed and full bath.

Going on upstairs to the 2nd story you will find the 2 remaining bedrooms and the shared 2nd full bathroom.  Like the livingroom and master bedroom down stairs, these 2 bedrooms will overlook the front yard of the cabin!  One bedroom will have a queen bed and the other has 2 twin size beds, along with each having its own TV & VCR for gaming or movies,  making this cabin amenable to various types of groups.

So .... winter, spring, summer or fall Cozy Corner Cabin is a great choice in accommodations for you Big Bear stay!

An Old Miner's Weekend!

Big Bear Lake's "Old Miner's Days" are in full swing!

Some festivities and attractions - just to mention a few ... being held this weekend will be:  the Calcutta Dinner on Friday night (July 12th) -  7:30 p.m. at Nottingham's on the corner of Pine Knot and Big Bear Blvd.  Also, the semi-finals for the Old Miner's Karaoke contest is being held at B's Boathouse Bar and Lounge on Alden Road - starting at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday (July 13th) will host the annual  Big Bear Old Miners Association International Chili Society Sanctioned Chili Cookoff at the Bartlett (Visitor's Center) parking lot starting at 10 a.m.  It's FREE admission and you can buy a "tasting kit" for $5.00 with which you can sample the various chili recipes and vote for your favorite!  Along with the cookoff, there will be additional activities for the whole family, one of  which - at the far end of the Bartlett parking lot near Murray's Saloon & Eatery - will be the "outhouse races", taking place at noon, with the "Calcutta lunch and auction" happening just before the races.

The Bluegrass music festival will also be taking place this  weekend at various venues throughout the Village,  "The Cave" and several local restaurants.

This beautiful cabin sits right on the edge of our 9-hole golf course with additional views of the valley in the distance!!  2 bedrooms plus a den, 2 bath, and a hot tub - this open and expansive cabin will sleep up to 8 guests. It has been recently remodeled, with all new stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops in the kitchen.  There is plenty of room for the whole family to help the cook prepare a meal while at the same time the cook can enjoy what's going on in the open living room that sits just off this beautiful modern kitchen. Eyes will be drawn to the beautiful floor to ceiling rock fireplace and then the views of the golf course and beyond from the floor to ceiling windows!  The main floor is also home to the master bedroom and full size bath.  The upper deck features a BBQ, picnic table and other seating to enjoy the outdoors day or night!

Going down to the lower level you will find the den, complete with a pyramid bunk bed and TV.  Off the den is the second bedroom with a queen bed and the second full bath.  Go outside from the den and you will see the 6 person hot tub where you can soak away tired muscles and enjoy more views of the golf course and surrounding valley!

The 4th of July is more than fireworks, and family get-togethers. The 4th of July or “Independence Day,” is a day in which we as a nation can reflect upon or nations history and remember the true meaning of this day.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
This excerpt from the Declaration of Independence has been considered one of the most well known passages in the English language.  This passage has come to represent a moral standard to which the United States should strive. Abraham Lincoln, (a major name in the history of our nation) argued that the Declaration is a statement of principles through which the United States Constitution should be interpreted. It sparked the human rights movement and has provided inspiration to numerous national declarations of independence throughout the world.

July 4th Holiday Options

We are on the eve of one of the most exciting calendar days and weekends in Big Bear Lake. The independance day holiday is known to locals and visitors alike to be an exceptional treat.  With lots of options for enertainment and activities, our mountain community can be considered a Disneyland in the San Bernardino Mountains.

If you haven't made reservations to stay the weekend, it isn't too late. Our office will stay open until 5 pm tomorrow to welcome guests looking for a cabin for the night, 2 nights, or extended weekend. If you're just visiting for the day, you have lots of  choices on activities to explore and have a memorable time.

First stop to consider is our Gold Rush Mining Adventures. Finding treasure is always exciting, our mining attraction is sure to please all ages. Easy and fun, you don't even break a sweat, we have everything you need to assure success. 

There are many other activities throughout the valley to consider. There's an Independence Day Fair at the Convention Center running from July 4 - 6. There are more than 50 crafters offering their creative items ranging from food products, clothing, garden trinkets and more. Continual live music will run everyday during the fair , performances featuring Silver Moon on Thursday and Friday and Skeleton Key on Saturday. Enjoy food and drink at Wyatt's Cafe and Saloon while kicking back and enjoying the music. Admission each day is free, hours are  10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. 

If you are in the mood for more music, try going over to The Cave, Big Bear's newest  concert venue. Beginning at noon on the July 4th holiday there will be two bands featuring music by Bruce Sprinsteen and Tom Petty. The Bear Cave Event Center is located in the Village.

Another option for food is the annual July 4th holiday barbecue hosted by the Rotary Club. Location for the barbecue is at the waterfront resort, the Marina Resort. Aside from the barbecue, there's also entertainment with games and facepainting for kids. The barbecue begins at 4:30-7:30 p.m. $25 includes entry and choice of steak or chicken dinner prepared by Barnstorm Restaurant, or $20 buys hamburger or hot dog meal from Red Baron Pizza. Beer and wine available including Big Bear’s own Stone Summit selections plus there’s festival food for purchase.

The Rotary hosts this event well and also offers an option of combining the cost of the meal, served with reserved seating on the deck for the show's best view for only $75.00 per VIP ticket. For $20.00 less ($50.00 price) guests will have reserved seating without the meal.

There are so many more options to explore but the main event is produced by Big Bears' Rotary Club. Known as Rotary Fireworks Show for StorySouthern California's best free show this year is no exception. The Rotary Club is reporting approximately $60,000 in fireworks to be set to light up the sky and illuminate the waters below. If you have a boat the best viewing is right on the lake. If you do not have a boat we highly recommend renting one if you can find one available. There's nothing like the experience of sitting on the boat as it rocks gently from the waves all the while watching the sky directly overhead light up in spectacular style while also taking in the reflection of the light as it dances all around you with the reflection in the water. There is no display anywhere that can give you the same effect as you get when you are floating on the lake during the show.  The Rotary is reporting to set off somewhere around 2,000 fireworks rockets during the grand finale, that's alot of explosives in a very short period of time. Don't just imagine, come and enjoy!

The next question to answer is, Where's the best seat for viewing? Any location around the lake, North or South shores is good. However, is the Rotary's options as well as B's Backyard Barbecue on the water. If you want to be on the water, aboard the Miss Liberty paddlewheeler during the show. The Miss Liberty launches from the Pine Knot Marina at 8pm.

Whatever you choose to do in Big Bear on the 4th or the holiday weekend is guaranteed to be exciting and fun, even if you're looking for a nice relaxing stay at a cabin. Take a deep breath and take in what fresh mountain air is like.
