We're Doing the "Snow Dance"!

Well, here we go again, waiting for Mother Nature or Father Winter, whichever you prefer, to grace us with some of that "white stuff" that keeps our little town going in the winter!

"Big Bearians" do what's called the snow dance in late Fall and Winter .... it's done in a variety of different ways ... mentally and physically .... clothes on, clothes off - we figure which ever way works is best!

But seriously, folks it looks like we just might get a taste of it this upcoming weekend!  We've got our fingers, toes, legs, and eyes crossed that the weather forecast will be "spot-on" and get us started on a great, snowy winter!

With that said, we still have some vacancies for Christmas reservations with specials that just might be the ticket for a great get-away for you and the family, or group of friends. or just you and your "significant other".  Check out the specials page at:  We have before Christmas specials, fill the gap specials, New Year's specials galore and more!

So why doncha help us out and do a snow dance of your own!  We could sure use the help - besides it's good to get that old heart pumping, get the blood flowing ... take care of 2 birds with one stone so to speak!  Dance on ..............

... horseback riding through the snow in my Winter Riding Tips article
Horseback Riding in Baldwin Lake
The crisp cold air, the wind on your face and you feel completely free! Riding a horse is a powerful feeling, you feel as though you are able to become one with this magnificent beast. Horses and humans do share an ancient relationship, the first domestic horses were about four thousand years ago from the Asian nomads. They remain loyal to humans and they hold a place within many cultures still today. Horses have been linked to heroic exploits in war as well. Horses graze and there are about four hundred different species of horses and there are some that remain in the wild. Wild horses gather in groups up to twenty, a stallion, which is a mature man horse will lead the group, female are called mares, and young horses are called foals. When young male horses become about two years of age the stallion will drive them away, they will in turn roam with other males until they are able to gather their own females to create their own herd. The Przewalski’s horse is the only horse that has never been domesticated and today they only exist in captivity, the last wild Przewalski horse was seen in Mongolia in 1968. Here is a list of facts about horses;
·         Horses are able to sleep either laying down or standing up
·         Shortly after a horse is born they are able to run
·         Domestic horse can live for about 25 years
·         Horses have about 250 bones within their skeleton
·         Horse are herbivores
·         A horse has the biggest eyes of any other mammal that lives on land
·         Horses eyes are on the sides of their head so they are able to see about 360 degrees
·         Horses gallop at around 27 miles per hour
·         The fasted recorded speed was at 55 mile per hour
·         There are about 60 million horses in the world
·         Scientist believe that horses has evolved from a smaller creature from about 50 million years ago
·         A young male horse are called colts and a young female horse is called a filly
·         A pony is a small horse
Baldwin Lake Stables here in Big Bear is open year round, the rates are by the hour, they offer one to four hour rides, however, reservations is suggested. Hey everyone, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Just to let you know, we have FRESH fudge in. This fudge is made by the owner herself in the kitchen of a contestant that won the Cupcake Wars TV show! There's milk chocolate, milk chocolate w/ nuts, and rocky road! Yum! Also, we just got in a TON of new inventory! We have various dinosaur gifts, beautiful necklaces of agate slices with initials on them, awesome agate slice night lights, gorgeous sterling silver necklaces that encase crystal and amethyst clusters, rock jelly beans, vintage soda pops, chocolate boulders, and an almost endless list of holiday gifts under $15! There is so much to see you must come and visit us! It's time to start thinking about the up coming holidays! No matter what you choose to celebrate or how, we have something for everyone! Also, check out our specials on our cabins. It's just a matter of time before the snow comes. They're saying we're to get a pretty good storm in later next week. Here's our local forcast... Nice weather headed into the weekend with cooling temperatures, but we'll squeeze in one more nice day Saturday with a few high clouds and highs in the mid to upper 50's; increasing southwest winds 10-20mph by afternoon. A weak disturbance will brush the area Sunday with a returning onshore flow and enough moisture we could squeeze out a few light showers or drizzle; cooler & breezy Sunday with a high around 50. Another decent day Monday ahead of our potent low pressure system expected to drop into the region Tuesday with wind, rain and more cooling. Clouds will increase Monday night with rain likely throughout the day on Tuesday, highs in the 40's with the snow level above 9,000ft as this system will have a warmer subtropical feed. Showers will continue off & on into Wednesday before tapering off Thursday as this whole system slides eastward by Friday. Snow levels may finally drop towards the tail end of the storm, but the majority of the precip will have ended, through we could still pick up a few inches on the tail end, leaving the most significant accumulations even above resort level. Should snow levels drop sooner than forecast then we would see a good amount, later and it's more rain, less snow etc. So be sure to check back often as this is still a developing situation; otherwise be prepared for a lot of cold and unsettled wet weather next week. Well, that's all I have for tonight. Hope you are all full and happy and with your families! Have a wonderful night! Cheryl

It's begining to look a lot like...

It's beging to look a lot like winter! Boy was it cold this morning or what?! We've been trying to keep warm ALL day! I even considered starting a fire! I noticed they were blowing snow this morning at Bear Mountain AND Snow Summit. That's a great sign that we're going to have a good winter. Despite the cold, we had some hard core miners today that weren't afraid to get their hands wet to mine for some treasure. By the smiles on their faces, it was worth it. So remember, if you think you can hang, we still have our big 'ol sluice going. So hurry down to mine before it gets too cold! Also, we can always crack open a geode, no matter WHAT the weather is like! And if ya ain't from around here, check out our cabins! We'd be happy to offer some good old fashioned hospitality to ya, and have ya stay in one of our many cozy cabins whether you’re a party of one or a party of 16! We've always got specials going, so be sure to check those out! If you're are thinking about staying with us for Thanksgiving, you'd better get to gettin', cause it's just around the corner... only 10 days left! Can you imagine it? You and your family all together, in a cozy cabin, with a nice fire going and a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner that has been prepared with love? Those are the memories you talk about year after year! So stay with us and let us help you make memories! We'd love to have you and yours! The Gold Rush Team.

We have three new "members" in our family of cabins that just might turn out to be the right one for your next trip to Big Bear!

First would be our  Sunset Pines cabin.

Sunset Pines - 1

It's a 2 bedroom 1 bath cutie for 6 people, located out in Big Bear City in the east end of our valley, away from the hustle/bustle of the busy congested areas, but only a short drive to the lake or any of our popular play and shopping areas!  Sunset Pines is a great value, reasonably priced for those on a budget!  It boasts a warm and inviting gas log fireplace, cozy comfortable seating and a flat screen TV in the living room.  There is plenty of room to separate and stretch out with 1 king-size bed, 1 full-size bed and 3 twins - plus a sleeper couch!
Out back there's a covered porch with barbeque and a picnic table for enjoying a great meal outdoors in a quiet and tranquil setting!

Second is our Blue Sky Retreat  cabin.

Blue Sky Retreat - 1

Located in the same area as the Sunset Pines cabin, Blue Sky Retreat is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath cabin with a game room and a hot tub!   Lots of space for up to 8 people!  The main  focal point of this cabin is the newly remodeled and well appointed kitchen with all stainless steel appliances and lots of counter space!  The game room has electric darts, a flat screen TV as well as it's own bathroom!  Furnishings are all updated and comfy with a central fireplace located between the living room and kitchen.  The outdoor spa is the perfect place to unwind at the end of your day on the slopes or at play at the lake!

Third would be our Cooler's Cabin.

Coolers Cabin - 1

Cooler's Cabin is centrally located in Big Bear - very close to skiing, the lake and shopping!  This cabin boasts three bedrooms, 2 baths and a hot tub!  The open floor plan makes it a great cabin for entertaining!  The kitchen is well equipped, the living room has a beautiful open beamed vaulted ceiling and the bedrooms are well appointed!  A great all around cabin for 8!  It has both front and rear decks with the hot tub on the rear deck which provides great ambiance for relaxation!

History Of Halloween

Halloween History & Origin

Halloween is the one of the oldest holidays still celebrated today. It's one of the most popular holidays, second only to Christmas. While millions of people celebrate Halloween without knowing its origins and myths, the history and facts of Halloween make the holiday more fascinating.
Some people view Halloween as a time for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-treating, and having theme parties. Others view it as a time of superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs.
As the Christian debate goes on, celebrating Halloween is a preference that is not always viewed as participating in an evil holiday. Halloween is often celebrated with no reference to pagan rituals or the occult.

Halloween History

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago.
All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, which was created by Christians to convert pagans, and is celebrated on November 1st. The Catholic church honored saints on this designated day.

Origin of Halloween

While there are many versions of the origins and old customs of Halloween, some remain consistent by all accounts. Different cultures view Halloween somewhat differently but traditional Halloween practices remain the same.
Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.
Samhain signifies "summers end" or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.
The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating
