Diving Deep!

The ocean, we use it for traveling, vacations, fishing, water source, and so much more. It can be a calm peaceful escape on the beach, or it could be a life threatening journey across the roller coaster like waves. But whatever the experience or image you have of the ocean you may have, have you ever asked yourself, what’s in there?
Did you know that the ocean is approximately 36,200 feet deep and as of 2013 takes up 71 percent of Earth? The Ocean also houses 99 percent of the biosphere and contains some of Earth’s grandest geological features. But rather than getting into the depths and shapes of the seafloor, I have a few things that might catch your attention.
When I say 60 foot long, whale eating, mysteriously disappearing sea monster what comes to mind? If you haven’t been keeping up with shark week or come to visit us at Gold Rush your best guess would probably be Jaws, right? But the answer is actually a Megalodon, which was a prehistoric shark that lived approximately 15.9 to 2.6 million years ago. Imagine Jaws 30 times bigger, that’s the Megalodon. But no need to be afraid, they supposedly went extinct a long time ago.
Now picture a 46-50 feet long, 5.5 ton weighing, T-Rex crossed with a modern day lizard... Got it? That my friends, is a Masasuar. Able to travel anywhere in the ocean, eat anything, and for all we know, swim deeper than any human ever could be able to. They were said to go extinct toward the end of the Cretaceous period, which was 65.5 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Although the Mosasaur had dinosaur like features it was actually a reptile. If you’re having a hard time picturing this creature, it is actually the giant “Shamu” attraction in the new Jurassic World movie. Now keep in mind, it is a Blockbuster movie so of course they tend to over exaggerate things a bit. So, although the Mosasaur is perceived to be an aquatic Godzilla in the movie, that isn’t entirely accurate but it will give you an idea of what the creature was like.
The ocean doesn’t only hold these giant beasts but also houses about 20,000 species of fish and up to 1.98 million species of animals and plants as well. Every year the census is adding about 150 to 200 species of fish and 1,700 species of animals and plants, so the numbers are and will continue to go up year by year. And with that being sai two thirds of marine species still remain unknown. Talk about a mysterious place!
The ocean is a very strange, mysterious place, much like outer space. We can only travel so far into the depths before it becomes too cold, too dark, and uncharted mysteries. This leaves the window open for endless possibilities of what may be beyond our discovery. For all we know, perhaps the Megalodon or the Mosasuar didn’t go extinct, they simply adapted to the deepest depths of the ocean. But don’t take my word for it, I’m not a scientist. I just have a creative imagination.
All this talk about the unknown probably gets you curious, right? Well you don’t have to search for answers any longer! Here at Gold Rush we can help you dive into some ocean facts, and make it fun as well! We have various sea adventures you may purchase and discover starting at only 20 dollars. We make leaning about the deep blue a easy, family friendly, fun experience for all ages. From sea shells to Mosasuar teeth, we have it all! So come on down any day of the week so we can learn together and have a blast doing it! Give us a call at 1(800)363-8303 or check out our website at goldrushminingadventures.com. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.

Ocean Veiw

The beach! One of most peoples favorite places to go. We love to smell the sea breeze, watch the sunset over the water, and getting our toes covered in sand. Creating memories of a lifetime, of course we all want a little something to take home with us, right? Souvenirs can be hard to come by, especially along the waters edge. But, the ocean adds a way of understanding this and usually conveniently pushes treasures to us with no effort at all. Yes, I’m talking about sea shells! We all have at least once gone to the beach, finding, and taking some shells as a memento of our trip. But do we really understand what sea shells really are?
Sea shells are actually an exoskeleton. Which means creatures of the sea such as snails, oysters, muscles, and so many more are actually born with them, cause them to grow, use them as protection from dangers of the deep, and also a hiding place. To give you a more common creature to compare this to, think of a turtle and its shell. Turtles are born with their shells; it grows as they do, offer a safe place and protection, and remains with them through out their life. Now if you’re anything like me, you already had an idea that some of these shells once had something in them but not all of them, right? Well that’s actually false.
A broad name for these shell baring creatures is a mollusk. What is considered a mollusk? Well, it’s extremely difficult to try to name them all because there are different classes and over 130,000 species to be included. This makes them the second largest group of animals in the world, outnumbered by only insects. With that being said, every one of the thousands of thousands of shells that wash up on the shore did indeed at one point have a mollusk of some sort inhabiting it. No other animal group in the world can compare to the form, texture, and patterns of these creatures either. Their kaleidoscope like colors and endless variety of size, shape, and uniqueness continues to amaze anyone to cross their path. This also explains why there will never be two shells the same.
Shells can be used for many things in many different cultures, such as tools, jewelry, decoration, utensils, currency, and much more. Not only are they fascinating to look at but scientists have also discovered that sea shells can be used in medicine, buildings, and even roadways! Who would have thought that mollusks exoskeleton would be so helpful to all of those outside of the ocean?
Now that you have discovered all of this I’m sure you want to plan a trip to the beach to see for yourself, right? Well let’s stop and think for a minute… At the beach you can get sun burnt, sand gets everywhere, and who knows if there will be more than a few shells wherever you go? I know, doesn’t sound as appealing as you wanted to hear, but I have good news for you! Here at Gold Rush we have made things easy, fun, and affordable! We have various Sea Tanks to purchase and pan through on sight, and we guarantee that you will find exotic shells, shark teeth, and so much more! We even have what we call a pearl dig kit that allows you to crack open an oyster YOURSELF and reveal the gorgeous pearl inside.
For more information, questions, or concerns please contact us at 1(800) 363-8303 or visit our website at www.goldrushminingadventures.com. We look forward to diving into a good time with you and your family!

Questions and answers

Picture a volcano. Heating, shaking, and beginning to bubble over. As the volcano irrupts the lava starts pouring out of every which way possible. The lava then begins to flow down the massive mountain, covering everything in its path. Although most people see this as a tragic experience, there is also something amazing and beautiful happening that most people have no idea about. What is happening, you may have seen on TV or perhaps a movie you’ve seen that as the lava works its way down the hill it crackles and pops, right? Well, those are actually gas bubbles, releasing the fumes created from the lava, the earth beneath it, and the volcano itself. But every so often those gas bubbles don’t pop. The gasses stay in the bubble and eventually they harden over many, many years. Imagine a time laps video if you will, going through hundreds of thousands of years of these gas bubbles getting harder, more rock like, and forming as years go by. During this many year process different minerals, weather patterns, and much more affective inhabitants seep through the surface of these gas bubbles. And as this is happening eventually they aren’t bubbles at all anymore. This transformation takes them from a fragile bubble and molds them into what we call a geode.
A geode can be hollow or a solid crystallized rock depending on how it grew over those years. Inside these interesting pockets over time they have create a crystal like interior. As the geodes become more visible to the trained eye after many years of waiting, they begin to collect them from all over the world. Most people wouldn’t know a geode from a rock on the side of the road because of how similar they look, so it lengthens the process that much more for the geode excavators to locate them at various places around the world. Having people finding said geodes all around the world obviously implies that there are many different types of geodes.
For example, here at Gold Rush we focus mainly on Moroccan geodes from South Africa which tend to be lighter and clear crystals inside, Candy Apple geodes from Mexico which live up to their name due to the faint red coloring around the rim with a spotted pinkish crystal inside, and Las Choyas(The Coconut) geodes also from Mexico but, I cannot give you an example of what you will find within these for none have ever been the same inside. So far here at Gold Rush we have has a dark smoky crystal but also a pure white crystal inside, so they truly are a mystery.
Now you may be wondering “How big are these gas bubble rocks?” Well, geodes can range anywhere from the size of your thumbnail up to about 4 feet high, and it all depends on where they came from, But considering most of the larger geodes can weigh up to 1,000 pounds so, here at Gold Rush we have limited our options down to sizes that range from being able to fit in a toddlers hand up to a grown mans hand for convenience and we see it as a very reasonable size. I know your next question, “How do you open these geodes?” and I have the answer. Also for the convenience of our guests, we have a two ton bottle pump surrounded by Plexiglas in which we can crack open your geodes. But wait, it gets better. We only set the geode in place, close the door, and whom ever your party chooses actually gets to take over and crack it open themselves! And with our prices starting at only 3 dollars it’s very affordable to check them out.
Now I know you have so many more questions, comments, and concerns for me but I don’t want to be selfish and answer them all myself, so you can give us a call at 1(800) 363-8303, visit our website at www.goldrushresortrentals.com, or just come on in! We are open 7 days a week, 9-5 fluctuating throughout the holidays and off seasons. We look forward to get crackin’ with you!

Geodes

Could you imagine walking along and stumbling on a rock? But when you picked it up it didn’t weigh very much. What kind of rock could this be? Why doesn’t it weigh very much? Well I am here to tell you all about Geodes that would be the rock you stumbled on. A geode is a gas bubble that formed in a volcano or in lava. Over hundreds of years mineral seep into the gas bubble and form crystals inside. There are many types of geodes and each one is unique. There will never be two identical geodes. Inside of each geode you will find many different variations. Depending on where you find your geode will determine what will be inside. Here at Gold Rush we have three different kinds of geodes to choose from. We have Las Choyas Geodes, Candy Apple Geodes and Moroccan Geodes.

Las Choyas geodes are also known as coconut geodes. These geodes can be hollow or even solid. Inside these geodes can be Smokey quartz, clear quartz, and if you are really lucky it can have amethyst inside. That doesn’t happen very often. These geodes might even have a secondary mineral or formation inside. You can find these geodes in Mexico.

Candy Apple Geodes have a unique red ring around the inside of the geode. That is how it got its name. These geodes can be found in Mexico.

Moroccan Geodes come in all sizes, but 99% of the time they are going to have clear crystals inside. These ones can be very light and those will be very hollow and have crystals formed to the inside of the rock. They can also be very heavy meaning the crystals have solidified inside. Both are very pretty.

Here at Gold Rush we have all three geodes that I have mentioned above. Our geodes start at $3 and can go all the way up to $265 depending on the type you want to take home. We have a machine here at our shop that you can actually break open your geode here with us. So if you are looking for an adventure, stop on by and break open a geode.
